Chapeltown Station transformed as 82nd Sheffield Scout Group unveils Vibrant Community Artwork
Commuters and residents using Chapeltown Railway Station have been greeted by a wonderful burst of colour recently, following the official unveiling of a brand-new community artwork piece designed entirely by local young people.

The 82nd Sheffield (Chapeltown) Scout Group has officially adopted the station as part of Platforms for Change, a high-profile national initiative launched by the Community Rail Network and Scout Association in partnership with the rail industry. The nationwide campaign focuses on combining crucial railway safety education with positive, grassroots community impact.
A Collaborative Community Effort
The station adoption project brought together the group’s youngest members, with both the Beavers(aged 6–8) and the Cubs (aged 8–10½) teaming up with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Authority (SYMCA), The Penistone Line Partnership and Friends of Chapeltown Station to design and build the unique installation. Over several weeks, the children traded their usual outdoor survival skills and campfires for paintbrushes and craft supplies at their Burncross Road Scout Hall, working diligently to create a visual masterpiece entitled “Our Train Adventure”

The bespoke artwork was officially unveiled at the station last week to the delight of parents, local volunteers, Parish Council and Northern Rail representatives.
Fostering Pride and Safety
Station adoption schemes across the UK are designed to connect communities directly with their local railways, transforming unstaffed or utilitarian transit spaces into welcoming, vibrant hubs. Through Platforms for Change, the 82nd Sheffield Scouts are not only brightening up the daily commute for thousands of passengers, but they are also learning invaluable lessons about how to remain safe around active railway lines.
The project has given the young Beavers and Cubs a profound sense of ownership and civic pride, knowing that their creativity will be enjoyed by the Chapeltown community for years to come.
