Chapeltown, Sheffield – Celebrating Our Local Community

Chapeltown is a thriving community in the north of Sheffield, combining a proud local history with the friendly, connected feel that makes the area such a popular place to live, work and do business.

Situated within the civil parish of Ecclesfield, Chapeltown has grown considerably from its early beginnings as a small settlement around the crossroads between Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Wortley. Its history is closely connected with the industries that helped shape South Yorkshire, including coal mining, iron production and engineering. The famous Newton, Chambers & Company established its works in the area in the late 18th century, with the former site now forming part of the Thorncliffe Industrial Estate.

While Chapeltown has changed over the generations, its strong sense of local identity remains.

Today, the area is home to families, independent businesses, community organisations, schools, sports clubs and residents who all contribute to making Chapeltown a welcoming and active place. With local shops and services alongside parks, playing fields and surrounding green spaces, there is a real balance between community life and convenient connections to Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire area.

Chapeltown’s heritage also continues to be celebrated and protected by local people. The Chapeltown & High Green Archive has spent decades collecting photographs, documents, memories and other material recording the area’s social and economic history, demonstrating the enthusiasm local residents have for preserving their community’s story for future generations.
